Research Assistant Position for innovation Fondef Project

A 18-months research assistant, starting January 1, 2020, is available in the field of water resource management and agricultural sustainability over semi-arid regions supervised by Prof. Cristian Mattar (biosfera.uchile.cl) and Prof Rodrigo Fuster (lat.uchile.cl)

Description of the scientific environment and background
In Chile, water is a private good which generates a strong pressure on daily lives affecting the agriculture system and making the ecosystems less resilience for  water scarcity scenarios. The Copiapó Valley gathered different uses such as mining activities and agriculture, although water availability is scarce for both uses including also water consumption per habitant. Thus, we study the water resource management at catchment scale using a combination of meteorological instrumentation, remote sensing monitoring approaches and water management framework for water use efficiency and sustainability.

Project description
The project is based on the research project “Transfer system of real crop evapotranspiration model for sustainable water management” funded by Fondef-IT program. The successful candidate will study the balance of water movement between evapotranspiration, agricultural management and water framework at catchment scale. This balance is crucial in the context of water scarcity and drought,  since water is a limiting resource and its is regulated by market baselines.
